📚What the science says

  • Music therapy for depression — large effect. BJPsych Open Sept 2025 meta-analysis: SMD −0.97 (95% CI: −1.23 to −0.71, p<0.01). Consistent across therapy type, delivery method, and provider training.
  • Music therapy for chronic pain. April 2025 meta-analysis (9 RCTs, n=787): significant pain reduction post-intervention, strongest for chronic neuropathic muscle pain and cancer pain.
  • Music therapy for anxiety. June 2025 eClinicalMedicine multilevel meta-analyses: positive effects across mental-health, medical, and work/study settings.
  • Sound therapy for chronic tinnitus. 2025 MOST trial (multicentre, double-blind RCT, 3 China academic hospitals) compared 4 sound therapies (music, music + pitch-centered narrowband noise, high-frequency-enhanced music, digital frequency-customised relieving sound) at 2 hrs/day over 9 months.
  • Binaural beats for tinnitus — mixed. 2024 RCT (instrumental music + 8 Hz binaural stimulation vs. instrumental music alone): both groups improved on THI and TFI, but binaural beats did not add benefit over music alone. Use binaural beats hopefully, not confidently.
